1008 6mm Low Carbon Steel Wire Rod
1. Product Introduction
Low-carbon steel wire rod is a steel product made from billets, heated, hot-rolled in high-speed wire mills, and then coiled into coils. It is a deformed product of round steel, typically with diameters ranging from 5.5mm to 22mm (common sizes include 6.5mm, 8mm, and 10mm). Coiled into coils, it can reach lengths of several kilometers.
Due to its low carbon content, this type of wire rod is soft, tough, and has excellent ductility, making it an ideal raw material for further processing. It is typically not used directly as a finished product, but rather as a raw material for subsequent drawing, rolling, forging, heat treatment, and other processes to produce various specifications of steel wire, wire rope, fasteners, and other metal products.
Common grades include: Q195, Q215, and Q235 in China; 1006, 1008, and 1018 in the United States; and S235JR in Europe.
2. Characteristics
Excellent plasticity and toughness: Its low carbon content enables it to withstand large plastic deformations at room temperature without breaking, making it ideal for cold working.
Good weld-ability: Its low carbon content reduces the formation of hardened structures and weld cracks during welding, simplifying the welding process and ensuring reliable joint performance.
High draw-ability: It is the base material for cold-drawn steel wire and can be easily reduced to the required fine gauge through multiple drawing steps.
Low strength and hardness: This is due to its low carbon content. Its "soft" nature is both an advantage (easily machined) and a disadvantage (limited direct load-bearing capacity). However, its strength and hardness can be significantly increased through cold working (such as cold drawing and cold rolling), a process known as "work hardening."
Low cost: Its relatively simple production process and low alloying elements make it one of the most economical and widely produced steels.
3. Applications
Low-carbon steel wire rod is one of the most widely used and consumed steel products in the national economy. Its primary applications, after subsequent processing, are in the following sectors:
Construction, metal products and fasteners, manufacturing and processing, and other sectors, including cold forging and extrusion, and agriculture.
In summary, low carbon steel wire rod is a basic and strategic industrial raw material. With its excellent processing performance and economy, it has become the starting point and cornerstone of countless products in construction, manufacturing and daily life.
